2023 Color Trend Report
Happy New Year! 2023 is here and the Color of the Year has been introduced as "Viva Magenta” by the Pantone Color Institute.
Published for the fashion industry by the Pantone Color Institute, the trend forecasting and color consultancy, this season’s report features the top ten standout colors, as well as current takes on the five new classics we can expect to see as fashion designers introduce their new spring/summer collections.
Viva Magenta comes from the red color family. “Reds are power colors that celebrate life. As a bright, crimson red, Viva Magenta balances boldness with a feeling of fun. It’s an unconventional shade for an unconventional time” according to Pantone.
How to Wear Viva Magenta
Feeling powerful? Wear the Color of the Year as a full-on statement. Need to wake up a quieter outfit? Viva Magenta works radiantly as an accessory — pair it with pale grays, blues, or pastels. Want to jump on the monochromatic trend? Try it with other pinks and command the room.
Wondering how to incorporate Viva Magenta into your look? Try a bold lipstick in this statement shade to liven up that LBD (little black dress), or with denim and a white shirt. Some Charisma Skin lip colors in the Magenta family are: Luxury Matte Lipstick in Valentina, or Liquid Lipstick in Wild Orchid and Luxury Gloss in Newberry. For fun, try adding a little sparkle to your lips with our new Liquid Lustre in Pink Kisses.
You can also add a hint of our Mineral Blush in the Mixed Berries shade to your cheeks for a pretty pink tone that works well with Magenta in your wardrobe. Viva Magenta is a beautiful color for nails, as well.
While Magenta may not be for everyone, there are other colors within the palette for the upcoming season that are very wearable for almost anyone. “Colors for Spring/Summer 2023 are recalibrated for the new era we are entering” says Eiseman.“From uplifting brights to ultra-calm tints and tones are highlighting individual expressionism in unexpected ways.”
With my background in color analysis, I appreciate that Pantone strives to include shades for everyone in their semi-annual Color Trend Reports. If your skin tone tends to be more fair and you are more drawn to pastels, you will likely find that either the warm (yellow-based) or the cool (blue-based) shades will work well for you.Pantone’s selection of “Core Classics” are basic colors that coordinate with the shades in the season’s color palette. This year they are: Skylight, Vanilla Cream, Infused Gray, Leek Green and Macchiato. If you have more olive tones in your skin and darker skin tones will look fantastic in Magenta, as well as the brighter blue-based colors this season.
If you love bold bright colors and have fun with “quirky contrast” you’ll enjoy the fiery red, bright orange, greens, hot pink and yellows in this Spring/Summer collection. According to Leatrice Eiseman, Executive Director of the Pantone Color Institute, “There is utility and basic-ness to this season’s color story, while at the same time, there is an uplifting vital sense of play that comes through.”
