Home Care Mishaps and Self-Care Tips
Home Care Mishaps and Self-Care Tips
We all want healthy skin that looks it’s best, especially as we approach the holidays, but there are some common home care mishaps that can prevent us from achieving our best results. Here are a few tips help keep your skin care on track for success!
1. Too Little Sunscreen
Many people skip sunscreen if they are not planning to be outside. This mishap is largely from a misunderstanding of how the sun damages our skin. Sun damage is cumulative. Everyday we receive incidental UV exposure as we’re coming and going. These small amounts of daily sun damage lead to the breakdown of elastin and collagen, resulting in wrinkles and sagging skin, as well as pigmentation issues.
Tip: Use a good broad-spectrum sunscreen in your daytime moisturizer,or in your foundation, BB creme or tinted moisturizer.
2. No Toner
Toner is often skipped in an skincare regimen due to a lack of understanding the purpose of using a toner. Toner helps remove any residual makeup and cleanser from the skin, and most toners help begin the process of hydrating your skin. The primary purpose of a toner is the lowering of the pH of your skin after cleansing, which helps prepare the skin for subsequent products and enables them to work more effectively. “Most importantly, recent research indicates that keeping the skin at a lower pH helps prevent skin inflammation that can cause the formation of enzymes that destroy collagen, elastin, and hyaluronic acid in the skin. This is especially important in older skin”, according to skincare expert Mark Lees, PhD.
Tip: Use a toner with an atomizer. Misting your skin is a quick and easy way to apply toner and especially good for mature skin. Blot excess with a towel and do not rinse after toning.
3. Snoozing On Nightly Skin Care
It can be tempting to skip your nightly skincare routine when you’re tired at the end of a long day, but you will receive far more benefits from your skincare if you follow at least a simple regimen at night.
Tip: Try taking off makeup and doing your skincare routine earlier in the evening.
4. Schedule A Facial
Remember the importance of a little self-care, especially during a time of year when you tend to be doing more for those you love. Professional skincare treatments are vital for the health and appearance of your skin, not to mention relaxing and rejuvenating overall! Schedule your facial now before the holiday rush!
